Student Attendance Review Board
The Calipatria Unified School District provides for the Student Attendance Review Board (SARB) process to address compulsory education attendance issues. Students between the ages of six and eighteen years of age are required to comply with California compulsory education law. Students must attend school regularly. Students who violate compulsory education laws with unexcused absences and excessive absenteeism are provided the opportunity to engage with school staff, Student Attendance Review Teams (SARTs), and the Student Attendance Review Board (SARB) to address the pattern of attendance or behavior problems. Resources and services are provided as intervention activities to promote a change in student attendance.
What is the SARB process?
The SARB process is initiated when a student has violated California Education Codes 48200 and been identified as a truant as per California Education Code 48260 (a)
48200 – Children Between Ages of 6 and 18 Years
Each person between the ages of 6 and 18 years, not otherwise exempted, is subject to compulsory full-time education.
48260 (a) - Definition of Truant
Any pupil subject to compulsory, full-time education or to compulsory continuation education who is absent from school without valid excuse three full days in one school year or tardy or absent more than any 30 minute period during the school day without a valid excuse on three occasions in one school year, or any combination thereof, is a truant and shall be reported to the attendance supervisor or to the superintendent of the school district.

It is the responsibility of the Superintendent and each school principal to notify parents regarding student truancy. Parents will receive written notification. Parents will continue to receive notifications of truancy from the school site unless an improvement in the attendance patter has been demonstrated.
Letter #1 will identify the student as a truant.
Letter #2 will identify the student has continued to violate compulsory education laws and is truant.
Letter #3 will identify the student has a habitual truant.
